What to Wear When Running During the Winter Months

Running in the winter provides many challenges. The biggest one being the cold. Jogging through your neighborhood on a 30-degree day isn’t the same as 70-degree day. It is possible if done right. The key to running in the chilly weather of fall and winter is dressing appropriately for the weather and exercise level. These tips will keep you warm and dry as you pound the pavement.

Layers

It can’t be said enough that layering the best way to stay warm when it's cold out. This can also be said when you continue your athletic work outside as well. A good set of men’s thermals or women’s thermals make a great base layer. On top of that, they provide a moisture-wicking layer to keep you dry as you perspire. Staying warm and dry is crucial on winter outings. Avoid cotton thermals as they can get damp and don’t dry quickly.

A lightweight jacket or vest of synthetic material will work great as a second layer. On top of that, try a windbreaker with no liner depending on the temperature for that perfect outer layer. Even with all this, you may want to start with one less layer as though it's cool when you get outside, as you run, your body heat rises which will help keep you warm with a good set of thermals.

A Smart Way to Accessorize

Even if your base is warm, your hands will get cold pretty quick as circulation in your hands worsens with more physical activity. Wearing gloves and a hat will help keep in precious warmth and keep you from wasting energy by rubbing your hands warm during the run.

Footwear

The running shoes you use during the summer and spring should work fine on most cold-weather runs. Keep an eye out for icy or wet spots in your path. If wetness or ice is an issue, look for a pair of water-resistant shoes with Gore-Tex. Another obstacle is the dreaded black ice. So, choose your route carefully. Also choose shoes with reflective elements especially as the days are shorter, and it gets darker earlier.

Hydrate

Drinking plenty of water, even in the colder days is essential, also if you don’t feel like you’re not sweating. As your base layer has moisture-wicking material and capabilities, it's necessary to replace the water you lose through exercise. This is important even in more extreme temperatures.

Protect Your Skin

Sunscreen is usually a staple for the spring-summer months but don’t forget it's still just as necessary during the shorter days of fall and winter It helps lock in moisture and proves a simple barrier against the elements to protect your exposed skin.

While running in winter may prove chilling, the right base layer of men’s thermals or women’s thermals will help keep you warm and dry during your exercise. These thermals will provide you with no excuses for the cold as you hit the pavement feeling dry and comfortable.
